Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The right to freedom of speech is one that every citizen should possess. The United States Constitution guarantees its citizens the right to free speech and expression, as well as the willingness to criticize government officials, whether they are from the local or federal level. In order for a democracy to work, it is important that people have this basic liberty because it allows them to express their thoughts and ideas without fear of being put in prison or punished by law. It is through these critiques that society can create change in order to make decisions with more accuracy and not just blindly follow what their leaders say.
